Happy New Year. It’s the time of year for resolutions. It’s also a good time to leaf through the pages of our logbooks and look back on the previous year’s diving activities. This month’s cover photos and Linda Lee Walden’s feature article "I Promise: The Diver’s Pledge" offers us the opportunity to examine the fundamental skills and practices we’ve learned in dive education — and to renew our commitment to becoming better divers in the year ahead.
FEATURES
22 I Promise:
As citizens we pledge allegiance to our country's flag; Scouts pledge to do their best; soldiers pledge to serve their nation, and elected officials pledge to uphold the laws of their jurisdictions. While not always one-hundred-percent effective, a pledge is our solemn promise to abide by a common set of principles and beliefs. Since we scuba dive for the fun of it there's no need to be solemn, but perhaps we'd all enjoy the sport more and be safer divers if we too, made a pledge to follow the principles of recreational diving.

28 The Smithsonian Institution:
In addition to overseeing the largest collection of museums in the world, the Smithsonian Institution supports ten research centers from Washington to Panama, and a corps of 190 scientists engaged in research activities in over 30 countries. And much of that research takes place under water. Find out what type of training it takes to be a research diver with the Smithsonian's Scientific Diving Program.

36 Save Your Breath: How to Safely Reduce Air Consumption
What is it about experienced divers that makes them use less air? What black magic have they learned that is not taught to new divers? While the ability to conserve air on a dive might seem like black magic, the secrets to low air consumption are really just common sense and simple science.
