By Barry and Ruth Guimbellot
Proper technique is important to our safety when we're going down and up as divers. This month's covers help illustrate Alex Brylske's feature article, "Understanding Ascents and Descents, Part Two: Relax and Breathe Normally."
FEATURES
24 Understanding Ascents and Descents, Part 2: Relax and Breathe Normally
In the second installment of a two-part series on descents and ascents, the author offers a physiological explanation of what may happen if we violate diving's prime directive, "Always breathe normally; never hold your breath."

40 The Best of Times, the Worst of Times: Perspectives on an Evolving Activity
Some divers have a been-there, done-that attitude about the sport; others claim the oceans are overflowing with opportunity for exciting underwater exploration. With logbooks that date back more than 40 years, the author provides a personal opinion about the wonder of being underwater.

52 'Take a Left at Aruba:' How Do Animals Navigate The Underwater World?
How do marine animals make major migrations each year, thousands-of-miles-long epics across open oceans? Biologists think they probably use a combination of senses, including sight and sound. But they're also likely to use a remarkable, albeit controversial, "sixth sense", the ability to detect and ride the magnetic energy of the Earth. In other words, they don't need to ask directions. They've got a built-in compass showing which way to go.
