Sounds of Science:
What Fish Sounds Say About the Health of the Sea
Some fish talk a
lot, or at least they make a lot of noise underwater. Researchers know
this and have their microphones pointed toward them, recording a whole
lot of grunts, chirps, thumps and even oop-oops. Now researchers
studying these underwater vocals are beginning to understand exactly
what it is they are hearing and how it translates to ocean health. |

Sharing the Adventure:
The Buddy System
Re-examined
While solo diving
using safe protocols gains wider acceptance among divers, tradition
still rules. The buddy system has for a long time been the preferred
path of divers, providing them not only with a social partner but, more
importantly, someone who can double-check dive equipment and look out
for their welfare above and below the surface. |

Burning Down the
House:
What Divers Should Know… And Do… About Tourism
The largest industry
on earth, tourism accounts for 11.4 percent of all consumer spending,
employs nearly 10 percent of the global workforce and comprises more
than 6 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP). That's the
good news. But tourism has another side that does not always command the
same attention. |
