Circleville Twin Quarries, Ohio

The Circleville Twin Quarries dive site is in the central Ohio community of Circleville, about 30 miles south of Columbus. The park is composed of 70 acres with two gravel 10-acre quarries open for scuba and snorkeling. Large shelter houses are found at each quarry with steps leading into the water. The quarry is open when the dive center is closed. Divers should complete the liability release at the first shelter house and deposit $10 in the box before diving. Calling or e-mailing in advance about your dive plan is encouraged to ensure the gate is unlocked. Underwater playgrounds include school buses, a Cessna airplane, boats and cars.

Depths to: 35 feet (11 m)

Visibility: 15-30 feet (4.5 to 9 m)

Water temperature: In the summer, the water surface can reach 85 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius).

Marine life: Catfish, bass, bluegill. Freshwater jellyfish appear in late summer.

Fees: Daily entry costs $10 for divers and snorkelers; annual memberships run $165 for singles and $225 for families. Air fills cost $6. Tent camp sites cost $5, for RVs, $17.

On-site amenities: Camping and picnic facilities with shelterhouses, fire rings and electrical hookups, and shower rooms, training platforms, changing rooms and rental equipment.

Getting there: From the north, take U.S. Route 23 south toward Circleville, access road off U.S. 23 just south of the Citgo Truck Plaza. Follow the signs to the dive site. From the south, take U.S. 23 north past Circleville, go over the overpass, turn left onto the access road to Island Road at Fletcher's Trucking. Follow signs to the dive site.
