Just as we’ve occasionally crossed into Canada to tell you about some neighboring dive sites, this month we do the same south of the U.S. border. La Media Luna (the Half Moon Lake) is a warm-water spring about a day’s drive from the U.S. border to the Mexico state of San Luis Potosi.
La Media Luna is at the far western edge of what is known as the Huasteca region, known for its rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, and exploring ancient ruins. La Media Luna has yielded archaeological finds such as a mammoth skull and bones in addition to arrow heads, pottery and statues.
Depths to: 188 feet (57 m).
Visibility: 66-99 feet (20-30 m).
Water temperature: 82-90 degrees Fahrenheit (28-32 degrees Celsius).
Aquatic life: Includes a “skunk fish,” Cichlasoma bartoni. During mating season it becomes a black fish with a white stripe along its dorsal area.
Fees: Be sure to exchange dollars for pesos before driving into Mexico, and along the way expect to pay several tolls plus an entrance fee to the lake.
On-site amenities: A dive shop is six miles from the lake entrance along Federal 70.
More info: Visit .
Getting there: From the Texas border at Laredo, take Federal 85 south through Monterey until reaching Federal 70. Head west for about 80 miles (128 km) through Rio Verde. About one mile (1.6 km) west of Rio Verde, on the south side of Federal 70 is a sign directing drivers to La Media Luna. Turn south on the gravel road and proceed about six miles (9.6 km) along an irrigation channel. Stay right at the fork in the road and continue to the lake.
