Lake Owen , Wisconsin

Part of the Chequamegon National Forest in northwest Wisconsin , the 1,323-acre (529-hectare), nine-mile (14-km) Lake Owen is considered one of the best freshwater dive sites in the state. Some resorts offer free airfills and rent out pontoons. Chequamegon is pronounced SHO-WAH-MA-GON and means "place of shallow water."

Visibility: 20-plus feet (6 m) in the summer

Water temperature: A dry suit is recommended most of the year.

Aquatic life: Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, crappie, yellow perch, panfish and trout.

Fees: User fees vary around the lake.

Getting there: From Cable, Wisconsin , drive east on M Highway to Trail Inn Road and turn left (north). Stay on the road and follow the signs to Lake Owen .
