McGregor
Lake, Marion, Montana
This
1,504-acre freshwater lake in Kootenai National Forest, just 35 miles west
of Kalispell, Montana, in the state's northwest corner, is a favorite of
many Montana divers. The lake provides a variety of diving opportunities for
the novice as well as the advanced. It has three marked boat dive
locations, The Glacier Wall, Mac Point, and The Wrecking Yard. Take
into consideration the altitude (3,892 feet) while diving these sites, and
always fly your dive flag while diving this lake. The Glacier Wall is a boat
dive with a buoy maker and boat anchor to moor your boat. Mac Point is known
for its large rock fingers. The Wrecking Yard can be dived from boat or
shore. It has two cars, a boat, a dome and other attractions.

Water
temperature: The summer month's surface temperature is 50-65 degrees
Fahrenheit (10-19 degrees Celsius). Below the thermocline, temperatures can
drop 10-15 F. Under the ice during the winter the water temp runs about 36 F
(2 C).
Aquatic life:
Lake trout, rainbow trout, yellow perch, and mountain whitefish.
Fees: None to
dive the lake. There is also no charge to launch your boat.
On-site
amenities: McGregor Lake Resort has campsites as well as primitive cabins,
and a restaurant and bar. The Forest Service Camp Ground has several
campsites and a boat launch. The lake also has a public boat launch and
Boisvert Camp, a day-use camp.

Getting there:
From Kalispell, Montana, head west on Highway 2 for about 35 miles (56 km).
Just after milepost 91 the lake is visible on your left. The resort is
located just before milepost 89, Boisvert Camp is located between milepost
88 and 87, and just past milepost 86 is the turn for the Forest Service Camp
Ground.
