Van Damme State Park, California

Considered a good spot for novice divers on California’s North Coast, this dive site provides a sandy beach for easy entry, and an offshore reef protects the area from incoming swells and surf. Thick kelp and heavy boat traffic can be issues in the summer so use caution. The site is popular with abalone divers and provides a good launching point for kayakers. Depths to: 85 feet.
Visibility: Ranges from 0 to 40 feet.
Water temperature: Average 48-52 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. A wet suit or dry suit is recommended.
Aquatic life: Include seals, sea cucumbers, nudibranchs and abalone.
   Fees: $8 per vehicle.
On-site amenities: A total of 74 campsites, walking trail, showers, restrooms, nearby park visitor center, which is open from late May to November 1. WiFi service is available within 150 feet of the visitor center.
